In WP2 the produced extracts library will be evaluated in vitro for their potency to contain novel cosmeceutical agents. More specifically, their in vitro anti-oxidant, anti-ageing (inhibition of elastase, collagenase, and hyaluronidase) and bleaching (inhibition of tyrosinase) activities will be evaluated. Additionally, in respect to the EU cosmetic legislation concerning safety, all extracts will be primarily evaluated for their cytotoxicity.

First biological results obtained from WP2 concerning the cosmeceutical potential of the first ~1000 extracts will lead to the selection of 100 hit extracts that will go on for further investigation in WP3. Some extracts are expected to be of the same microorganism strain, but cultivated under different conditions (nutritional arrays). For this selection, the biological potential of extracts in all assays in combination with other criteria like absence of any cytotoxicity will be considered.
